What to do in practice

  • If your company is based in one of the host cities, apply by the closing date (November 19 for Gifu City, November 20 for Niigata City)
  • Even if you do not attend, review internally whether you set out trading terms in writing and set payment dates as required by the Act on Optimization of Subcontracting Transactions (the former Subcontract Act) and the Freelance Act
Note: The dates, venues, programs, capacity and application methods differ by host city. For this article only three pages were checked — the nationwide announcement and the announcements for Gifu City and Niigata City — so the content of the other host cities is not covered. The expert meetings themselves are aimed at experts such as business associations, consumer groups, academics and the press. Please check the issuing agency for details.

When one company buys and sells from another, there are rules to stop a company in a strong position from forcing unreasonable terms on a company in a weak position. The government body that watches over those rules is the Japan Fair Trade Commission. On October 21, 2026, it announced that it will hold meetings in eight cities around the country. In Obihiro, Niigata and Gifu there will also be an event called the One-Day Fair Trade Commission, where you can attend briefings on the rules and get advice free of charge.

Three steps to take part

  3. 3. AttendGo to the venue on November 26, listen to the briefings and ask for advice

Points

  • The events are on November 26 and 27 and December 9 and 10, 2026, in eight cities around the country
  • In Obihiro, Niigata and Gifu there is also a One-Day Fair Trade Commission with briefings and consultations

For example: The government sets rules so that a big shop cannot push a small factory to cut its price too far, or drag its feet on paying what it promised. These briefings explain those rules, and like a school open class they are free to attend.
