Sakura Report (July 2026): economic activity is recovering or picking up in all regionsA report by the Bank of Japan summing up the economy of nine regions across the country (the Sakura Report)

On July 9 the Bank of Japan published the Regional Economic Report (Sakura Report) for July 2026. It compiles reports from the Bank's branches and other regional economic departments, based on information gathered for the branch managers' meeting held the same day, and states that although some weak movements are seen, economic activity in all regions is "recovering moderately", "picking up" or "picking up moderately".

Overall economic judgment by region (July 2026; selected regions)
  • Applies: Hokkaido: picking up moderately, although some weak movements are seen
  • Applies: Tohoku: picking up
  • Applies: Kanto-Koshinetsu: recovering moderately, although some weak movements are also seen, partly owing to the Middle East situation
  • Applies: Tokai: recovering moderately
  • Applies: Kinki: recovering moderately, although some weak movements are seen
  • Applies: Kyushu-Okinawa: recovering moderately, although some weak movements are seen

Key points

  • Tohoku is described as "picking up", Tokai as "recovering moderately", Chugoku as "on a moderate recovery trend" and Shikoku as "picking up moderately"; the wording differs by region, but all describe a recovering or picking-up direction
  • Compared with the previous report (April 2026), the wording changed only for Kanto-Koshinetsu, where a phrase about the effects of the Middle East situation was added.
  • On capital investment, Hokkaido is described as "increasing moderately", Tohoku as "on an increasing trend", Kyushu-Okinawa as "at a high level", and the other six regions as "increasing".
  • On personal consumption, Hokkaido and Tokai are described as "holding firm" (Tokai: "although some weakness in household sentiment is seen"), Kyushu-Okinawa as "robust", and Kinki as "increasing moderately".
Who is affected: Business owners and accounting staff who want to see how the Bank of Japan summarizes economic conditions in the regions where they and their customers operate

What to do in practice

  • Check the overall judgment for the region where your company and main customers are located on the Bank of Japan's page
  • Read the full report to see whether the areas described as showing "some weak movements" cover your industry
Note: The Sakura Report compiles information gathered by the Bank of Japan's branches and other offices; it does not show the results of any individual company. Outlooks and estimates are those of the publisher and do not guarantee the future.

The Bank of Japan divides the country into nine regions and, four times a year, reports on the economy by putting together the information gathered by its branches and other offices. In the July 9 report, published on July 2026, the economy in every region is described as "recovering moderately", "picking up" or "picking up moderately". Some weak movements are also seen, however.

How the report comes about
  1. (1) GatherBranches and other offices around the country collect information on their regional economies
  2. (2) CompileThe reports are put together in one for the branch managers' meeting
  3. (3) PublishThe Bank of Japan publishes the economic judgment for each region

Points

  • The country is divided into nine regions, and each region's economy is described in words such as "recovering" and "picking up"
  • In every region the economy was described as moving in a good direction (recovering or picking up)
  • Some regions are described as showing "some weak movements", so not everything is going well
For example: It is like nine groups in a class each reporting "our group is gradually doing better", and the teacher putting it all together on a single sheet.
